Keys to finding the meaning of life

In my opinion finding purpose in life is not as much of a mystery as it is made to be.  I believe we each have our own “meaning(s) of life” and if you have a desire to find yours; simply ask yourself these questions:

  • If I were to die tomorrow, what would I have left behind: and what would I LIKE to leave behind? Did I create something? Did I improve something? Did something I do help the people animals, and/or world around me?
  • What is most important to me?
  • What makes me happy?

The best advice I can give is “We only live once;”  life is too short to spend it simply obtaining, spending and obsessing over money.  Stop and revel in the present moment; You are ALIVE!

And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”  – The Dalai Lama XIV

I believe that in order to live a happy, fulfilling life, you need to spend time finding things that you enjoy doing and seeing.  Finding lots of friends and spending time with them and your family.  I also believe both learning from and teaching others anything that is important to you are crucial to a productive life.

Remember that there never will be a “perfect time,” so the best way to finish something that you always wanted to get done, is simply to start (and then continue working on it whenever you can until you are satisfied)!

Write that book or poem you’ve always wanted to.  Start that company or plan that trip and start saving if necessary.

Quit Smoking, or stop any other addiction without spending a dime.

As a previous smoker (for 15 years), I know first hand how hard it can be to quit something that you have been mentally and physically addicted to for a long time.  I tried quitting multiple times but couldn’t get past the first couple weeks, even with the help of e-cigarettes.  Well I was able to quit about 6 months ago now completely “cold turkey.”  What was my secret?  Simple, I used the power of “mind over matter.” 

Now let me make it clear that I am not a superstitious man by any means; I just know for a fact that our minds are capable of amazing things.   One of the most important things you should know when trying to accomplish anything is also the most simple; the only way you can achieve something, is if you believe that you can achieve it.  Then it is just a matter of will-power/effort, and if appropriate; practice and method development. 

One trick that I can give you in addition to just believing that you can quit smoking, is to give yourself a natural high… when you feel like you need to smoke; simply breathe in very quickly and hold your breath when you can’t inhale anymore.  Hold it for a few seconds and you will feel like you just smoked a cigarette; and you won’t need one anymore..  Just remember that if you simply try to quit, but don’t fully believe you can, or think it is too hard, or have any doubt; you won’t quit. 

You have to want to quit before you can!  Then it is a matter of perseverance.  I am at the point where I can be around other smokers, and have no problem not having one.  Some more quick advice is to find something to do instead of smoking; perhaps if you smoke every morning when you wake up or get in a car you should drink a glass of water or chew a piece of gum instead (or inhale quickly and hold your breath)… Good Luck and don’t forget that you can do anything you put your mind to!

Go with the flow; and find peace

You don’t have to be religious to know there is something amazing about nature.  Just like you don’t have to be happy at all times to have found peace.  If you stop to smell the roses; you will start to notice how your day to day stresses are really not worth suffering for, or dwelling on.  Remember that a “bad day” is all about your perspective;  if you think you will have a bad day, you will!  Ask yourself: “How important will this problem/issue/argument be tomorrow?  next week?  next month? next year? in 10 years?”  

Trying to remember that life is too short to focus on the trivial, and to try to find, and do the things you enjoy; can greatly increase the general quality of life.   If you are at work and feel like the day is just dragging on;  try to remember that in the scheme of things the amount of time between now and when the work day is finished is a blink of an eye; and before you know it, you will be off.  

I find that just going with the flow, rolling with the punches and just letting things go, and generally choosing to be happy, is the way to finding peace.  You don’t have to meditate, or do yoga, or even believe in anything to be a spiritual person.  Perspective and mood is everything.
